About the Recipe

Pulled pork is a savory dish made by slow-cooking seasoned pork until it's tender enough to be easily shredded into small, bite-sized pieces. The pork is typically seasoned with a blend of spices, and sometimes marinated or cooked with a sauce for added flavor. It's a popular dish in many cuisines, often served on sandwiches, tacos, or as a main course with sides like coleslaw or baked beans. The slow cooking process allows the pork to become incredibly tender and juicy, resulting in a flavorful and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds, boneless pork, shoulder butt, cut into six pieces

  • 3 Tbsp light brown sugar

  • 2 Tbsp fresh rosemary, finely shopped

  • 1.5 Tbsp salt, corsely ground

  • 1 Tbsp hot smoked paprika,

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1/2 cup low sodium chicken broth

  • 3 Tbsp tomato paste

  • 1/4 cup of Barbecue sauce (optional)

Preparation

  1. Combine the sugar, all the spices and the salt in a bowl. Rub all over sides of the pork.

  2. In a pan or slow cooker with sauté setting, brown the pork on all sides in two batches, about five minutes per batch.

  3. Mix the apple cider vinegar, chicken broth and tomato paste in a bowl and mix. Return pork to the slow cooker, pour in the apple cider vinegar mixture, close the lid and cook until very tender on HIGH for 5 to 6 hours or on LOW for 8 to 10 hours (the meat should fall apart easily with a fork!)

  4. Remove the pork, place in a wood cutting board. Skim off some fats from the liquid remaining in the pot. Shred the pork into small pieces; top with the remaining liquid from the pot. (Optional at this point, you can add the barbecue sauce to the pulled pork and mix it in).

  5. Serve hot with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw, cornbread, or in a bun. Enjoy!!
